The role

  • Job Title: Head of Economics, Insight and Advice
  • Location: Remote, Edinburgh or Grimsby (UK based – travel to offices will be required on occasion)
  • Contract: Permanent, Full-time

Join us as our Head of Economics, Insight and Advice and become part of the public body tasked with supporting the £10bn UK seafood industry.

The skills you will bring to the role

You will be dynamic, confident and results focused with excellent leadership skills and ability to lead our team of economics, market analysts and researchers to deliver high quality outputs. You will be responsible for the delivery of expert economic and strategic advice, and evidence to inform business and policy decisions relevant to the UK seafood industry. We have a first-class reputation for delivering quality research and advice and we need a leader who is passionate about managing and nurturing a busy team.

You will be required to work with a broad range of stakeholders in this role; from fishermen to company CEOs, to board members and senior civil servants, so you must have persuasive communication and influencing skills. As the Head of Economic, Insight and Advice you will play a critical role in ensuring that our research informs effective policy development across the UK.

As our Head of Economics, Insight and Advice you will be…

  • Leading a team of up to 8 staff
  • Representing Seafish at a senior level across the seafood industry and across government
  • Responsible for managing a budget of up to £400,000 per annum
  • Responsible for providing analysis and advice to: support effective government policy development and implementation and enable effective industry decision making
  • Overseeing Seafish’s economic data collection programme
  • Ensuring that economic, market insight and research outputs meet the required quality standards and are a recognised input into business decision making and the development of UK policy
  • Ensuring delivery of appropriate, high-quality expert economic and strategic advice relevant to external and internal customers
  • Delivering specific projects on behalf of the seafood industry and/or government that result in high quality economic advice and reports
  • Providing expert advice on the development and implementation of policy on issues relating to the seafood supply chain
  • Co-ordinating and participating in government and industry meetings to ensure the delivery of expert economic and strategic advice, to support policy and business decision making
  • Organising, facilitating, and presenting at high profile conferences, meetings etc. to raise the profile of Seafish as a key provider of fisheries and seafood industry economic and strategic expertise in the UK and beyond.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A first degree in economics, marine science, or a policy related discipline as a minimum
  • Minimum of eight years post-qualifying work experience
  • At least three years’ experience managing staff
  • Effective team manager with experience of (1) delivering results through leading a professional team, and (2) planning, managing and delivering team outputs that are fit for purpose
  • Proven quantitative and qualitative analysis skills
  • Demonstrable experience of policy development and implementation
  • Ability to demonstrate strategic planning and management skills
  • Skilled at communicating complex and technical information to non-technical audiences verbally and in writing
  • Experience of managing and monitoring budgets
  • Working knowledge and understanding of a. the UK seafood supply chain (or experience of the seafood industry in another jurisdiction) b. the importance of the UK seafood sector and its value to the UK economy.

This is a full-time, permanent role and can be home-based, or in either of our Edinburgh or Grimsby offices.
