Job description

The M/V Golden Alaska is installing a brand new Fishmeal plant for A Season 2021 and we need a Fishmeal manager to run it!

The Fishmeal Manager position is responsible for overseeing the operation and personnel of the fishmeal processing plant. The ideal candidate will provide leadership to the team of fishmeal operators, will keep supply inventories current and implement the plant’s preventative maintenance program, and will ensure operation of the plant consistent with applicable quality and sanitation standards and maintain all HACCP and production paperwork with strict attention to detail.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the startup, operation, and shut down of process line machinery to ensure compliance with applicable standards
  • Maintains complete documentation of quality control checks and procedures
  • Monitors fishmeal plant operation line from the control room and processing area to ensure optimum production
  • Adjusts pump speeds and auger speeds to safeguard product quality
  • Performs moisture and quality analysis tests on fishmeal and reports findings as appropriate
  • Surveys amount of raw materials in hopper to confirm correct flow into plant
  • Schedules and performs maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and notifies appropriate personnel of any major repairs required
  • Supervises fish meal crew for compliance with company policy and procedures
  • Supervises loading of supplies and unloading of product, responsible for tallies and product quality sampling and related recordkeeping
  • Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of meal and oil plant operation and production
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret HACCP, GMP, and SSOP requirements
  • Basic mechanical skills to perform maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Ability to stand on their feet for extended periods of time where physical work may be required, including lifting items of up to 70 pounds
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a timely manner
  • Ability to manage others in a production environment
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of experience as a Fishmeal Technician on a vessel or in shore-based fishmeal plant preferred
  • 1+ year of experience directing and training a crew
  • 2-3 years' experience operating machinery in an industrial or manufacturing setting

Work Hours:

  • 12-16 hour shifts, 7 days a week while on board

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.

Mental Activities:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork skills. The employee will occasionally use interpersonal and customer service skills.
