Did you know that nearly half of the world's largest 100 seafood companies are in Asia, and a quarter in Japan?

Or that the top 100 generate just under $100 billion of revenue?

Were you aware that Norway, a country of just over five million people, has ten companies in the top 100, one behind the US, a country with a population of 313 million people?

All this and more is contained in the new 110-page report from Undercurrent News, the World's 100 Largest Seafood Companies. In this report, which took several months to researchUndercurrent has compiled a ranking of the 100 largest players in the seafood sector, upstream to downstream, using 2012 turnover figures.

The result is an unparalleled overview of the largest companies in the industry, some of which are highly visible in the media (think Nissui, Marine Harvest, Thai Union), and others, like Red Chamber or F.C.F. Fishery, which are far more elusive, yet have a large reach.

Japan comfortably dominates the ranking, including through large trading conglomerates and the Tsukiji wholesalers.

Of the 10 largest companies, half are from Japan, one from Thailand, one from South Korea and two from Norway.

Spain’s Pescanova also features in the top ten, though its survival as a single company is in doubt since its bankruptcy proceedings started on March 1, 2013. This 110-page report features:

  • Table ranking the 100 top companies, featuring their latest revenue in original currency, and in US dollar equivalent
  • A stylized map of the world, illustrating the location of the top 100 companies
  • A profile page on each company featured, with key contact and executive details, and a description of the company's activities
