The European Aquaculture Society (EAS) has announced that Aquaculture Europe 2016 will take place in Edinburgh – the first time an EAS event has taken place in the UK.

AE2016 will feature a scientific conference, an international trade event, special sessions for aquaculture producers and satellite workshops and events.

The EAS 2012-2014 President, Kjell Maroni, expressed the satisfaction of the Board of Directors, with "a very strong proposal that mixed well the attributes of Edinburgh, the status and potential of aquaculture and blue biotechnology in Scotland and the strong support of the Scottish Government for this event".

He also commented, "This is the first Aquaculture Europe event ever to take place in the UK and in Scotland in particular and we are very happy with the proposed theme on blue biotechnology, coming 10 years after a very successful AE event in Barcelona on the same theme. Our partners in Scotland will be able to mobilise the sector there and beyond and we are sure that AE2016 will be very well attended – both for its content and for its location".

The will take place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) at the end of September 2016.

Perspectives for Fishmeal and Fish Oil

A Symposium jointly organised by the Nordic Marine Think Tank and EUfishmeal with funding support from the Nordic Council of Ministers to take place at the North Sea Centre, Hirtshals, on August 29-30, 2016.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring stakeholders together for an informed discussion of trends, challenges and opportunities for the fishmeal and fish oil value chains (catch, processing and end use i.e. from supplies over processing to demand) in light of changing policy environments with respect to fisheries management, regulatory framework, food security, technological developments and changing stakeholder views.

As a background it is noted that fishmeal and fish oil have for many years been of central importance to the feed compounds industry for use in animal feed, for both fish and land-based animals. Over the past decade an increasing demand for fish meal and fish oil for aquaculture and pharmaceuticals has resulted in increasing prices.

The extent to which fishmeal and fish oil can be substituted, without compromising fish health and quality, is a challenge. A better mapping and understanding of fishmeal and fish oil's economic, biological and social interaction with the marine environment and the sector's economic and social contribution is warranted.

The Aquaculture Roundtable Series 2016 (TARS)

The theme for the sixth Aquaculture Roundtable Series (TARS) 2016 is Shrimp Aquaculture & the New Normal. TARS 2016 is a follow-up to the 2014 meeting that focused on the recovery, revival and renaissance of Asia's shrimp aquaculture, and the industry's struggles to contain disease outbreaks, mainly that of the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV).

Despite some progress, in terms of management and disease preventive measures, vulnerability to disease outbreaks continues to disrupt production. Asia's production of farmed shrimp, on the whole, declined to an estimated 2.2 million tonnes in 2015 compared to the pre-EMS production of 3.2 million tonnes in 2011. Currently, non-EMS affected countries like Indonesia, Philippines and India contribute to the global shortfall in supply.

TARS 2016 will provide a neutral platform for key industry stakeholders to convene and exchange insights and experiences as to how Asia can reconcile, as a unified group, to increase its sphere of control in disease prevention and management. The objective is to bring the industry to a New Normal to better manage and control the variables in shrimp farming; build on industrialisation; and develop technical, operational and production efficiency. However, it is important to realise that while ‘no one size fits all,' the aim is for each industry sector to find the right business model. To move forward, the push will be for Asia's industry to self-regulate and be more proactive in marketing its shrimp.

South-East Asia and Pacific Regional Fisheries Summit

Fisheries in Indonesia are in decline, as they are in the rest of South-East Asia. Nearly everywhere, fisheries are either fully exploited or overexploited. The consequences are enormous, damaging ocean ecosystems, livelihoods, food security and broader economic well-being and development. Yet signs of hope are appearing as countries throughout the region take important steps to overhaul the sector. For example, Indonesia's efforts to deal with illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing spearhead a broader ambitious reform effort for fisheries. Central to the task is identifying the risks and opportunities involved in investing in sustainable fishing and aquaculture, along with needs for and potential sources of finance.

The Economist Events' ocean initiative is unique because it is a genuinely multi-sectoral dialogue - bringing together senior stakeholders from industry, government, financial institutions, science and NGOs. The summit aims to provide a platform for the industry to share their perspectives on what is needed to enable the transition to sustainable fisheries - in terms of both regulation and investment - as well as what works and what doesn't from the perspective of industry players who are already making this transition.

Join CEOs and business leaders to discuss investment opportunities in the transition to sustainable fisheries in South-East Asia, including:

David Carter, Chief executive officer, Austral Fisheries
Alan Bollard, Executive director, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Secretariat
John Keeler, Chief executive officer, Blue Star Foods
Thomas Kraft, Founder, NorPac Fisheries Export
Muliaman Darmansyah Hadad, Chairman, Otoritas Jasa Keuangan
Martyn Schouten, Chief executive officer, Rabobank Indonesia

The issues of sustainability of our fisheries resources and ensuring food security for our growing world population are more important than ever before both to the seafood industry and to policymakers. FAO is pleased to be in Vigo to celebrate alongside industry what has been achieved during the first twenty years of the Code, and outlining our main challenges and aspirations for the next twenty years.

2015 Liangzhilong - The 3rd Chinese Food Material Festival

The first “Chinese Food Material Festival” was held in 2008, where a demand and supply meeting was held to support the communication between suppliers and restaurant customers. Based on this flexible model, we successfully held three consecutive Lanesync Frozen Food Marketing Forums. With the development of our industry influence and company scale, we held Liangzhilong, the first and second session of Chinese food material festival, on April 2013 and March 2014 respectively. Both of them created a professional and national communication event for the food material industry, winning broad recognition and being highly applauded.

The 3rd Liangzhilong Food Material Festival will take advantage of the integrated supply chain service to combine main processes in a business flow, from the cuisine creation, food materials purchasing, cold chain logistics, city distribution to payment service. This idea is based on the spirit of “open, pragmatic, sincere, sharing”, as well as aiming to enhance the service standard and industry influence.

It offers a one-stop service for our customers, shortening the purchasing period and ensuring food safety. Moreover, the LBD E-Commerce platform is a highlight in the integrated supply chain service, where you can find international food material conveniently and flexibly based on this platform.

    Aquaculture Europe 2014

In aquaculture, we can add value to our products, through processing, transformation and packaging. We can also add value during the production cycle, by management of its various components, so as to increase overall productivity. We can add value to research, by producing ‘knowledge products’ that can be used by others – for incremental knowledge advancement; for developing innovation or for supporting policy. We can add overall value in research management by harmonisation in programming; by better use of infrastructure and by nurturing our human resources.

Finally, we can add value to societal, environmental and natural resources, by generating new ‘economic activity products’ based on environmental services, or diversifying existing ones. So the focus of the AE2014 theme is on ‘products’ rather than ‘production’, and the three thematic plenary presentations will focus on this.

Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition & Awards - IceFish 2014

The Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition started in 1984 and, in response to the wishes of the exhibitors, has been held on a three year cycle ever since. This ensures exhibiting companies have new technologies, products and services to showcase at each event which, in turn, means visitors know they rely on the exhibition to keep them informed of new developments from across the market.

The 2014 show will be the 11th in the series and the previous event held in 2011, saw an encouraging air of optimism as many exhibitors secured large orders and, not only was attendance up on the 2008 event by 9% to 13,547, but the number of countries from which attendees came, also increased to 52.  In addition, new for 2011, was an ecolabelling and traceability seminar provisionally entitled ‘Icelandic Responsible Fisheries Programme’. This was organised by Promote Iceland and held alongside the exhibition in association with The Fisheries Association of Iceland.

The Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition 2014 will be much more than just an exhibition and plans for a conference, the 6th Icelandic Fisheries Awards, inward delegations and plant visits are well underway.

The exhibition covers every aspect of the commercial fishing industry from catching and locating to processing and packaging, right through to marketing and distribution of the final product.

International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding, 2014

Australia is proud to be hosting the 16th International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding (ISFNF XVI), the premier international forum for researchers, academics and industry concerned with the nutrition and feeding of aquatic animals. This biennial event will see several hundred attendees from around the world converge on the tropical city of Cairns for five days between 25–30 May 2014, adjacent to Australia’s magnificent Great Barrier Reef and the fabulous Daintree Rainforest.

High quality contributions are now being sought on key ‘Themes’ that progress the development of science in the nutrition and feeding of aquatic animals and that stimulate innovation in the world’s growing aquaculture industries. As aquaculture now supplies more than half the world’s edible seafood, development of sustainable feeds that support the growth of this industry and the ever present challenges of global food security will become increasingly important. Symposia such as the ISFNF are critical in meeting these challenges as they provide a forum for contributors to present research and innovative technologies that will ultimately play an important role in meeting the challenge of supplying increasing quantities of feed to the burgeoning aquaculture sector.

As with most ISFNF events there will be plenty of opportunity to network, socialise and collaborate during both formal and informal functions. The Asian Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conference, 2014

Asian AI&RMC evolves from the very successful series of biennial Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conferences that have been held for over 25 years in cities around Europe. Organised by AUMS Ltd. of The United Kingdom, the conferences have regularly drawn delegates from up to 25 countries, in Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America, Asia, and Australasia.

With aquaculture production in Asia dwarfing production in the rest of the World, and with the region developing its own insurance needs, the region deserves its own insurance and risk management conference. The first of these will take place in Hong Kong, from 13th to 15th May, next year, 2014.

The conference is for specialist aquaculture insurers, reinsurers, brokers, loss adjusters, risk management surveyors, producers, government officials responsible for the aquaculture industries in their countries, banks and finance houses, international agencies for aquaculture, aquaculture veterinarians, the legal profession, and other parties with related interests.

    Offshore Mariculture Conference 2014

Offshore Mariculture is an international two-day conference, with technical visit, on the offshore fish farming business. Aimed at growing offshore fish farming businesses the conference explores the progress and prospects for offshore aquaculture in European and international waters.

By moving farms into cleaner, deeper waters, conflict between the offshore aquaculture industry and coastal users will be reduced and it will also provide a much better environment for aquaculture operations to exist. The aquaculture industry needs to keep growing globally and aquaculture remains the fastest-growing animal-food-producing sector, now accounting for around half of all fish consumed today.

The Offshore Mariculture Conference will examine the progress and prospects for farming offshore covering everything from the latest legislation, investment and financial issues, managing, marketing and the day to day running of an offshore business to the latest technical advances that will help to make the life of the marine aquaculturist easier.

    GOAL 2013

The Global Aquaculture Alliance invites professionals across the seafood value chain to engage in the responsible aquaculture movement at GOAL 2013, based at the Hotel Pullman Paris Montparnasse in Paris. This year’s theme, “Join the Journey,” recognizes that responsible aquaculture is not a destination but a journey. Many of the sustainable seafood goals set years ago by retailers, foodservice operators, suppliers and producers are now becoming standard industry practices.

GOAL 2013 sets out to define the aquaculture agenda for the next 10 to 20 years. In particular, what else can be done to ensure the additional millions of tons of seafood required to feed the world are produced in a responsible manner? The event will also focus on opportunities to grow aquaculture production in Africa and what fish farmers there can do to better access European markets.

As in previous years, the GOAL 2013 conference program will feature three half-day stints of presentations and discussions, with up-to-date information on supply and demand forecasts for major traded farmed species, environmental and social challenges, investment opportunities and consumption trends. Throughout the event, dozens of speakers and panelists will share their thoughts on the future of responsible aquaculture.

GOAL 2013 is expected to draw upward of 400 seafood professionals representing the world’s leading retailers, foodservice operators, suppliers, producers and NGOs. In addition to the program sessions, there will be many opportunities to network with industry leaders and set up meetings with existing and potential suppliers and buyers.

Baltic Sea Conference - Blue Growth, Sustainability and Water Industries

The sea is a shared resource, which has provided economic progress, prosperity and well-being throughout history to the populations living close to the Baltic Sea. Today the Sea is also fragile and past exploitation has led to unacceptable levels of pollution.

Delivery on blue growth is high on the EU and regional agenda and contributes to achieving the goals of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth as well as the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

A new and strong regional alliance between public, private and international partners is needed to unlock the potential for growth from the maritime economy and to turn the environmental challenges into future opportunities for innovation and sustainable development. Blue and Green Growth must go together.

"The Baltic Sea Conference 2013 - Blue Growth, Sustainability and Water Industries” aims at bringing all relevant stakeholders together back-to-back with the 2013 Helcom Ministerial meeting in Copenhagen 3 October.

Aquaculture Forum Bremerhaven Workshop IV - Development Trends and Diversification in European Aquaculture
Bremerhaven is one of the leading locations of the fish-processing industry in Europe. Aquatic products derived from aquaculture contribute a major share to the total fisheries output of the European Union. Nevertheless, the demand for aquatic products is still increasing. Further opportunities for industry growth will depend on many factors, not only coping with changes in globalized markets, but also adjusting to increasing demands from competing water resource users. The risks associated with new developments need further attention in relation to production systems, product safety, quality control and global as well as regional economics.

The Aquaculture Forum Bremerhaven 2012–2013 focuses on these issues and brings together international business and science for a series of four workshops to contribute to future developmental needs of the European aquaculture industry.

After three decades of rapid growth and a decade after the FAO Bangkok Declaration (Aquaculture Millenium Conference 2000), time has come to reflect these FAO recommendations in light of new developments with a strong focus on the European scenario. Such reflections are warranted to properly assess the future needs of the industry in terms of incentives for a sustainable development, further research initiatives and adequate regulatory frameworks. Four workshops will focus on key issues that are important for the future of aquaculture development.

Four workshops will focus on four key issues that are important for the future of aquaculture development in Europe.

The workshops are planned as two-day events with presentations from industry, science and administration. Several keynote lectures (45 min) — relevant to each of the central subjects — plus a series of contributed papers (up to eight speakers; 30 min; extended discussions) will be included in the programmes. A social evening event will provide ample opportunity for participants to exchange views and discuss future concepts.

An extended panel discussion on day two will give opportunity to debate the future of aquaculture in Europe, addressing obstacles and opportunities in view of the globalize and highly competitive markets. The outcome of the panel discussions will be reflected in jointly formulated specific recommendations, which will be published and distributed to industry, inter-governmental and international agencies as well as regional and national authorities for further considerations.

Companies will be given space for poster presentation, including small exhibits.

Finfish Aquaculture: Industrialisation and Sustainability
As Asian producers grapple with increasing costs of finfish production whilst facing cyclic demands, industrialisation and integrating production (from breeding to farming to market distribution) may be the way to the future. The global nature of the white fish trade also requires that the complex intersection of changing market conditions with production methods address issues such as food safety, quality standards and the environment.
This is the focus of the third Aquaculture Roundtable Series (TARS 2013). To be held in Singapore from August 21-22, 2013, the theme for TARS 2013 is Finfish Aquaculture: Industrialisation and Sustainability with specific emphasis on controlled production and science, rather than empirical production methods. Key topics will address monoculture, integration, standardisation of production methodologies, economies of scale and year round production of this aquaculture sector.

    Sustainable Ocean Summit
The World Ocean Council's second SOS will be held in Washington D.C. to further advance leadership and collaboration among the diverse ocean business community in addressing marine environment and sustainability challenges. The SOS 2013 event builds on the highly successful SOS 2010, held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which drew together more than 150 representatives from a wide range of ocean industries.

The SOS is an unprecedented gathering of the ocean business community that catalyzes the growing interest among ocean businesses for more effective leadership, collaboration and business value in addressing shared ocean environmental challenges.

The SOS brings together the wide range of industries involved in the use of marine space and resources, including shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, aquaculture, ports, mining, renewable energy, tourism, dredging, marine science/technology, maritime law, insurance, finance, and others.

The SOS is organized by the World Ocean Council (WOC) - the only international business leadership alliance on Corporate Ocean Responsibility.

A steadily growing number of companies from the wide range of ocean industries worldwide are distinguishing themselves as leaders in ocean stewardship and sustainability by becoming WOC Members.

The SOS Organizing Committee includes a diverse mix of leadership companies who are engaged in design and development of the event.

The conference will address priorities for cross-sectoral industry leadership and collaboration in ocean sustainability, including: ocean policy, regulations and governance; marine spatial planning; the role of industries in ocean and climate observations; biofouling and invasive species; fisheries and aquaculture interaction with other industries; cross-sectoral collaboration in responsible use of the Arctic; sound and marine life; cargo issues, port waste reception facilities and marine debris; marine mammal interactions; the role of finance, insurance and legal sectors in ocean sustainability.

Other cross-cutting topics critical to responsible industry operations in the marine environment will be developed as the program evolves.

SOS sessions will be designed to provide the state of the knowledge on these issues, including topic overviews, case studies and examples of best practices. The SOS is designed to advance the development and implementation of solutions by providing input to WOC priority-setting, programs and projects.

Limited opportunities are available for speakers to address the themes above. Experts and thought leaders interested in being considered as speakers are encouraged to contact the WOC.

SOS participants are primarily the senior management responsible for environment and sustainability in companies and industry associations from a wide range of ocean industries. Other ocean stakeholders are welcome to participate, e.g. senior representatives of international organizations, government agencies, academic/research institutions and non-government organizations.

    ComFish Alaska
ComFish has come a long way since its inception 32 years ago. It has grown into Alaska’s longest running fisheries trade show, and is the only trade event held in a major fishing port – Kodiak.

ComFish began in 1980 by the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce as a marine trade fair. The next year, ComFish moved into the National Guard Armory. By 1986, ComFish moved to larger quarters provided by Alaska Transfer & Storage. The event continued to grow and three years later, it was time for ComFish to find a bigger home. ComFish moved to one of the largest airplane hangars at the U.S Coast Guard Base in Kodiak.

In 2002, ComFish expanded its focus beyond the trade show and added a Fisheries Forum component. Each Year, experts and policy makers come to Kodiak to address the changes, challenges and opportunities facing Alaska’s commercial fishing industry. ComFish has also become famous as being the host of one of Alaska’s most unique political events. Starting in 1990, candidates vying for Alaska governor have come to ComFish to participate in a Gubernatorial Debate. There is only one catch – the candidates are limited to a single topic: Alaska’s seafood industry.

The “Goober Debate” marks the first time that all candidates gather together during an election year, and it always attracts tremendous media attention. The Debate has always drawn the full slate of candidates to appear in Kodiak. The two-hour event is broadcast live statewide via the Alaska Public Radio Network. In 2004, Alaska candidates for the U.S. Senate also began participating fisheries debates at ComFish. In 2009, ComFish moved to its permanent home at the new Kodiak Convention Center located downtown right across from the harbor.

International Fisheries Observer & Monitoring Conference
The Fisheries Observer Programs are essential in the collection of quality biological and fisheries data to generate a solid knowledge basis to enable States to undertake conservation management and sustainable development of fisheries.

The first IFOMC was held in 1998 (Seattle, Washington, USA), organized by the National Marine Fisheries Service of the U.S. and Fisheries and Oceans from Canada, taking into consideration that while data analysis methods applied at the time were appropriate, the data underlying the investigations was not sufficient in quantity and quality. This fact in some cases is still in effect, manifesting itself in the fact that Fisheries Observer Programs carried out by some Research Agencies, don't have the human capital, organizational, relational and financial needed to ensure adequate quality of data, a concept that refers to the usefulness, objectivity and integrity of the data.

Since then there have been six conferences, with a progressive increase in the number of countries and delegates over time, where Monitoring Methods and Programs, Observers Training and Competences; Data Users; Data Collection, Management and Quality and Trends are the most analyzed issues. This demonstrates the importance of this event, consolidated over the years as a high-level space for the exchange of knowledge and experience, being a center of Intellectual Capital generation and Knowledge Management for Fisheries Observer Programs around the world.

We encourage you to actively participate in this important international event, by either submitting your abstracts, attending, or passing along this information. Your valuable participation will contribute to the continuous improvement of our conservation management of marine resources and the ecosystems that support them.

Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conference
The Conference will take place on 4th April and 5th April 2013, at the Marriott Renaissance Polat Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey. The Hotel is located about 15 minutes from Istanbul's Attaturk International Airport, and 20 minutes from the heart of Istanbul with its famous Blue Mosque and unique places of historic interest, the great Bazzar, the Topkapi Palace, and the Bosphorus Strait that runs from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea and separates Europe from Asia.

The focus of the Conference is: "Where have we got to?". The market for aquaculture insurance is nearing its 40th birthday, and over the years the industry of aquaculture has grown from a small base mainly consisting of shellfish production of such species as oysters and mussels, and limited  production of fish species such as trout and carp, into a massive international industry, that is a huge employer and revenue producer and spans the whole globe. Importantly, over the last 2 years the volume production of aquaculture has surpassed the production of fish hunting!

Aquaculture has also grown in sophistication. It has developed wide ranging husbandry techniques for rearing an increasingly diverse group of creatures and plants; it has major feed and equipment supply requirements, as well as constantly evolving health and safety needs, and disease and veterinary requirements, and it is increasing in financial sophistication with its own derivatives market for salmon and eventually other species.

The 13th Conference in Istanbul will provide a forum to examine the potential for new products and ways of spreading the risks of aquaculture. It will also provide an opportunity to examine the new derivative markets evolving in the industry, and new areas of interest such as seaweed and aqua biofuel production, plus updates on disease, disease treatment developments, and other key risk management issues. Finally, the Conference will examine whether the insurance techniques use to underwrite crops in agriculture, can be applied to aquaculture.

Fishing & Aquaculture Middle East Exhibition @AGRAME
The Middle East is enjoying a growing population base, driving increased food consumption trends. Traditionally, per capita consumption of seafood has been high and with recent financial prosperity, increased tourism and education regarding the health benefits of consuming fish, total seafood consumption is increasing annually.

Modern transport and logistics practices have grown these markets from coastal areas to encompass substantial inland and remotely located populations. As a consequence, fresh and processed seafood products are now widely available throughout all Middle East countries.

The abundant fishing resources of the Arabian Gulf provide for a substantial fishing industry, however, reflecting the current global environment, the responsible management of this industry and its finite resource is paramount. Availability of capital and recent commitment in the region to sustainable management of natural fishing resources has encouraged investments in major aquaculture projects.

The event will provide operators with the possibility of comparison with all operators involved in the industry – from breeding, processing and transformation up to distribution and consumption – and will be an opportunity of meeting between demand and offer, as well as professional updating and networking.

During the first edition of AquaMed, the presentations of the qualified speakers attracted considerable interest, also highlighting the advantages of aquaculture, which stands out for its higher environmental sustainability, lower energy consumption and more affordable prices compared to ‘wild’ fishing.

Aquaculture Forum Bremerhaven Workshop III - Finfish Nutrition and Aquaculture Technology at the Crossroads
